Trackball Hack

Kensington Expert Mouse - Programmable Track ball... I got it for about 25 dollars on EBay. It's flat, nothing fancy, and programmable.. just what I wanted and about 135 dollars cheaper then Happ... <single tear>

Time to break it down. Hidden screws under the sticker.. no surprise.

You have to take out the roller first and then unscrew the screw hidden beneath it.. I'm as little slow so it took me a few seconds to realize this..

Your blue circle is going to be your power and your red your what actually get depressed to make the circuit.. I'm kinda bluffing this part as I haven't tested it yet.. but what the crap it's late and no one is probably going to read this before I edit it out..

Ohh the microswitch... I yanked this out of the board. Technically you don't need to do this. I did this by laying the soldering iron flat on the three leads and then pulling on the microswitch from the opposite side.

This is just a picture of my soldering job, nothing spectacular. Because I ripped out the microswitch, I just ran the wire through the existing holes in the pcb. Right side goes to the power portion of the arcade microswitch and the left side to the ground portion of the switch.

Top little connector is the connect to the power side (blue circle) and bottom to the ground (red circle). Yes that is an All Electronics catalog underneath it.

So pretty makes me want to cry. Yes that is a Digi-Key catalog right next to the trackball mouse. Repeat the same procedure for the other side. Power is towards the outside of the PCB and Ground to the inside. The side lead, just in case you were wondering, is used to hold in the original microswitch.

The hole I routed/sanded. About a quarter of the ball sticks out above the control panel... maybe a little bit more. I used vinyl dye to make it brown.

Using 4 inch machine screws and some nuts I have securely mounted my trackball to my CP.

View from another angle.

So pretty. I tested the trackball out and it works fine. I busted it in playing some Centipede. It rolls descent enough and works perfect in windows as a mouse. My black Start buttons are so pretty. I don't plan on putting any plastic "guard" or anything like that around the trackball. I may vinyl dye the cup that holds the ball from underneath as I can see it slightly through the whole when I'm playing.
