DD-WRT Planter Router

I needed a nice way to repeat the open wireless signals in my neighborhood.

For this project I used a Buffalo WHR-G125 router. I reflashed the router with DD-WRT v24 - build 2007 - 00815 and then used the AutoAP script to automatically connect to the strongest Open wireless connection. Once everything was up and running fine, I took the router apart as in it's standard form it wasn't water proof. The case breaks down into two basic parts and the antenna is hard wired, so that will need to be cut and extended.

For the water proof case I used a Gladware Entrée sized container. I drilled out the appropriate holes for the power and the antenna. I used clear water proofing sealant to seal the holes closed that I had made. I used a Trendnet external antenna for my external antenna. Be aware that if you decided to just splice the antenna wire on to the original antenna wire as I did, the g125 antenna wire is extremely thin and is covered by a layer of copper shielding, so make sure your soldering the right layer of wire together or your signal strength will be horrible.

Just another look at the container with everything in place and sealed up. I did some water submersion tests with the power off before I actually placed it in the planter.

Another look at my sealed wire.

I used a fairly large planter, as you can see from the picture. I retro spec I should have got a planter with a wider base.

The finished product. Ohhhh Ahhhh. Yeah that's right I'm slick. So pretty. This router has now been through several bad rain storms, one set of tornado's (Although they hit down the street), and just general usage with out any issues at all. I'm actually using this router for the internet right now.
